Some Faqs about camp:
-
K̲’aayx̲ada Adventure Camp is remotely located, so there is no cellphone service. If you have any urgent concerns or messages for your child, you can:
ask your school’s administrator to get ahold of the camp staff
Your child may want to reach out to you through Satellite texting. We ask that you discourage this as much as possible to help us maintain a cohesive in-camp environment. If your child is asking to go home, please contact your school’s administrator so we can come up with a plan to support them together. If there is ever any concern for your child’s wellbeing, please know that we will contact you directly.
-
We offer many different science based activities and learn wilderness skills while at camp. You can read about all of them here.
-
While we do not regularly have an active lifeguard on staff, all students and adults are required to wear a lifejacket while on/in the water, regardless of swimming ability. This policy is in line with the water safety measures required by SD50.
-
We have everything they need for their time at camp. We are fully stocked with all sizes of warm layers, rain gear (including boots), sleeping bags, tents, dry bags, backpacks, even extra socks!
Please do not let the packing list deter you from sending your child to camp.
-
In addition to at least one SD50 chaperone (often your child’s classroom teacher), there are always a minimum of 6 camp staff present (often more). Youth are never away from staff with Wilderness First Aid training. You can learn more about our regular camp staff here.
We also have two skilled local cooks at every camp who are certified in FoodSafe.
-
We have a beautiful bunkhouse with 2 separated bunk rooms for youth, an open gathering space, and a loft for chaperones. Each bunk room has changing rooms and plenty of bunkbeds with very comfy mattresses!
For Gwaii Haanas and Mountain Hike trips, youth will sleep in 3 person tents with their peers on the nights we are away from camp.
-
Every day there are 3 full meals and 2 snacks, comprised of mostly local and organic foods. Each meal is lovingly prepared by our 2 cooks to make sure your child has more than enough fuel for the high-activity days at camp.
Cooks are also fully prepared to accommodate food allergies and dietary needs.
